Introductory Governance Course

Until 31 December 2020 this course will be free to all FEDSAS Members. To find out more please send us an email to This course is designed to equip you with a basis understanding of what school governance entails. The concept of "governance" is broad and comprises of numerous crucial components, which if not understood and applied correctly, can lead to disasterous consequences for the school upon whose governing body you serve. This course is designed to equip you for the role which you are required to fulfill and to provide you with the necessary training and information which you require in order to carry out your roles and responsibilites confidently and effectively.

Once you have worked through the modules, you should be in a position to move on and complete the quiz. The purpose of the quiz is not only to test your knowledge, but to gauge your ability to apply your newly acquired knolwedge to solve practical problems in a real world environment.


There is no formal qualifying criteria required in order to undergo this training course, simply an eagerness to learn and improve the functioning of the SGB upon which you serve.

Dr. Jaco Deacon

Jaco is Deputy Chief Executive of the Federation of Governing Bodies of South African Schools (FEDSAS) and trustee of the South African Educational Development Trust. He holds an LLB, LLM and a doctorate (LLD) in Labour Law and is an admitted attorney. Jaco also serves on the South African Council for Educators and the Ethics Committee. He is the Editor the Juta Education Law and Policy Handbook, the “Case Law Handbook on Education” and “Financial Management in Public Schools”. He is also the author of “School governance: common issues and how to deal with them”, “Human Resources Management in Public Schools” and the compiler of the Pocket Statutes on Schools: Law and Governance. Jaco is a regular speaker at national and international events and has published various research papers in accredited journals. He is the current President of the South African Education Law Association, member of the Board of the Interuniversity Centre for Education Law and Education Policy and member of the Advisory Board of the World Education Congress. He is also the chairperson of an SGB.
