About This Course
To establish legal compliance and foster a culture of responsible information processing within schools, we present this short course as an introduction to the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).
This course is designed for elected members of school governing bodies, educators and non-educator staff. By completing this course, you will gain a high-level understanding of the prevailing data protection legislation in South Africa, specifically how it might apply to you and your school. The aim of this short course is to help you understand what POPIA is, what its status is and how it afects you within the school environment.
You do not require any special qualification to complete this course as it is specifically designed for those who don’t have any legal experience, but who require an understanding of the law which regulates the processing of personal information. All that we require from you is an enthusiasm to learn about interesting topical legal issues faced by the South African school environment.

Do I need to purchase any additional course material?
No, the only additional material which you may want to refer to is available on the platform, or could be the POPI Act itself and a copy thereof may be accessed on the Department of Justice’s website http://www.justice.gov.za
